Indian Railway Just for Exams

Indian Railway has grown into Asia’s largest and the World’s second largest railway system under a single management. At the end of March 1999 it had a route kilometrage of 62,809 and is the biggest public sector undertaking in India.
Indian Railways run about 12,700 trains every day connecting 6,896 stations with a fleet of 7,429 locomotives, 35,650 passengers service vehicles, 5,408 other coaching vehicles and 2,53,186 wagons as on 31st March,1999. About 22 per cent of the total track is electrified. During 1998-99 the freight haul totaled to 4,416 lakh tones of revenue earning freight traffic operating upon the Broad Metre and Narrow gauges of the Country; passengers traffic around 4,441 million in 1998-99. Now fastest Indian trains are ‘Shatabdi Express’ which run between New Delhi and Bhopal, New Delhi and Lucknow, New Delhi and Kalka, Chennai and Mysore, Mumbai Central and Ahmedabad. New Delhi and Chandigarh, New Delhi and Amritsar, New Delhi and Ajmer, New Delhi and Dehradunn, Howrah and Bokaro Steel City, Howarh and Rourkela, Chennai and Coimbator, Mumbai CST-Pune. Its Maximum speed is 140 km. Earlier ‘Rajdhani Express’ was the fastest. The newly introduced train on April 16,2002 is the Jana Shatabdi Express between Mumbai & Margaon. Another Jana Shatabdi Express was started between Nizamuddin and Kota in Oct.2002. Such trains on pther routs also are in the offing.
